As renovations continue at the North Sewickley Presbyterian Church in Ellwood City, the new community center addition at the Monaca United Methodist Church has come to completion.
The Carey Community Center was designed and constructed as an accessible, multipurpose addition to the existing 100-plus-year-old brick church. With the recent acquisition of the houses next to the church, the funds dedicated for the Carey Community Center through the estates of Margaret Carey and her brother, John Carey, were used to begin the project in earnest.
The addition houses a 3/4-size basketball court, a full-sized volleyball court, and features state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment for community events, dinners, and contemporary services for the church. A brand new kitchen facilitates the preparation of meals for a variety of events. The Carey Community Center also contains new church offices, a pastor's study, and an elevator that connects the existing church basement and sanctuary with the addition.
Great care was taken during the design of the addition to make sure the exterior of the Carey Community Center complimented the architecture of the original church building while utilizing current materials and energy-efficient mechanical/electrical systems. Located in the vestibule of the Carey Community Center, the United Methodist Cross and Flame element was designed for the space by Franus Architectural Associates and produced by the project's general contractor, Adolph Johnson & Son Co. It was the perfect solution to hide the sprinkler pipe.
